About the Mayor's Guides

The Mayor's Corps of Honorary Guides was founded in 1930 by Alderman Thomas Sturge Cotterell MBE JP to provide free walking tours of Bath. Each guide gives his or her time voluntarily to describe the City to residents and visitors. Every new applicant receives six months training and is then assessed to ensure high standards of knowledge and presentation. All accredited guides wear the distinctive Mayor's Guide badge and work in partnership with the Local Authority. Some of the guides carry out individual research into the City's past and publish their work.
