THE AWARD

The Mayor of Bath's Citizen of the Year Award seeks to recognise exceptional volunteers who give their time and effort to helping other people without expecting anything in return. The award is open to residents of Bath who have contributed to the well-being of the City and its people by long-term voluntary work or one very special act.

At the end of January 2010 the 782nd Mayor of Bath will be searching for the his Citizen of the Year.  If you know of anyone who deserves to be recognised for their voluntary work and has helped to enhance quality of life in the City, and they live, work or belong to a group based in Bath, please complete a nomination form  and return it to the Mayor's Office, Guildhall, Bath, BA1 5AW by Friday 26 February 2010.  It does not matter if they have been entered before, as long as they have not actually won the award.

Joan Bird is a founder member of the Rosewell Court Residents' Association and has been actively involved for around 30 years, she is also a member of the North Area Panel, the Bath – Aix-en-Provence Twinning Association, French Circle , and other community activities to help others.

Grenville Jones was nominated for his extensive work in helping to change the lives of the older generation by setting up the Golden-Oldies groups around the City.  His enthusiasm is well known and has persuaded folk to go out and meet others for a sing-a-long and have a wonderful time, making a difference to whole communities across the City.

Clarissa Notice gives her time and help to various voluntary groups and organisations, she is a Governor of a local School where she assists those with emotional and psychological problems.  She was nominated for her activities, generosity and spirit towards helping others.

Chris Kilminster has for the last few years organised the Bath Blitz Memorial Service.  Last year he was able to arrange for
Herr Willi Schlukecker, one of the German bomber pilots who took part in the Baedecker Raids in Bath in 1942 to attend.  It was a remarkable Ceremony, 66 years to the day earlier there had been death and destruction.  Among those killed were Chris' grandparents.  The event was broadcast live worldwide, and Chris achieved a great deal by bringing people together – the old, the young, former enemies – for two simple acts; regret and forgiveness.

Jennifer Skellett is a voluntary Trustee at Partis College, a local Almshouse, a volunteer at Bath Abbey, a great active supporter of the RUH Forever Friends Appeal, the Olympic Arts Project, the NSPCC Castle Project (which provide counselling for abused children and young people), and was instrumental in setting up Water Aid (based at Wessex Water) and raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the charity.  She is involved with a large variety of projects in the City and also personally supports many by her willingness to listen and lend a helping hand selflessly.
